Cloud Telephony vs AI Voice Agents India

Cloud telephony gives your business phone infrastructure. An AI voice agent gives that phone number a trained employee who can answer, qualify, book, follow up, and update records.

If you are searching for cloud telephony in India, you probably do not want phone infrastructure for its own sake. You want calls answered, leads called back, conversations recorded, and fewer customers slipping away. Cloud telephony is still important, but it is the pipe. The AI voice agent is the workflow running through that pipe.

The simple difference

Cloud telephony gives you virtual phone numbers, call forwarding, IVR menus, call recording, missed-call alerts, and APIs. It is infrastructure. An AI voice agent uses that phone infrastructure to hold natural conversations: answer questions, qualify leads, book slots, send WhatsApp confirmations, collect payment links, and write outcomes to your CRM or sheet. Most businesses need both layers, but they should buy the outcome, not just the line.

What cloud telephony is good at

Cloud telephony is useful when you need a business number, call routing, call logs, call recordings, extension routing, or programmable calling APIs. It is a strong fit for teams that already have human agents and only need the phone system. If your staff are trained, available, and fast, cloud telephony can make them easier to reach and easier to measure.

Where cloud telephony stops

A virtual number does not answer a pricing question. An IVR does not persuade a fresh ad lead to visit your site. A missed-call alert still depends on a human calling back. Call recording tells you what happened after the fact. For small teams, the failure is usually not that the phone line is missing; it is that nobody can respond consistently at 6 AM, 10 PM, during rush hour, or within 60 seconds of a lead form.

What an AI voice agent adds

An AI voice agent adds the operating layer. It answers inbound calls 24/7, speaks in the caller's language, asks the right questions, checks availability, books appointments, sends WhatsApp confirmations, calls new leads back, retries no-answers, and hands off serious cases to the owner. In Dvaarik, the same brain can also run WhatsApp replies, Instagram DMs, payment links, and CRM updates, so the call does not become a disconnected transcript.

Decision table

Your current problemBuy cloud telephony only?Buy an AI voice agent?
Need one business number and call forwardingYesMaybe later
Have a human sales team but no call logsYesMaybe later
Missing customer calls when staff are busyNot enoughYes
Paid leads are not called within 60 secondsNot enoughYes

If the phone system is the bottleneck, cloud telephony is enough. If response speed and conversation quality are the bottleneck, an AI voice agent is the better first purchase.

Pricing reality in India

A real phone number has a telecom cost no matter what software runs on top. Dvaarik keeps this simple: the dedicated number recharge is ₹2,000 per 30 days for one number and one concurrent call line, debited from prepaid credits. Voice usage starts from ₹2/min with simple per-minute billing. That means a business doing 300 minutes of AI calls spends about ₹600 in voice usage, plus the number recharge if it needs a phone line. Chat-only, WhatsApp-only, and Instagram-only workflows can skip the phone recharge.

Recommended setup path

Start from the revenue leak. If calls are being missed, use the inbound AI voice feature and the AI receptionist India page. If paid leads are going cold, use the speed-to-lead AI calling guide and outbound calling feature. If you are comparing platforms, read the best AI voice agent platforms in India and then check the pricing page. For the infrastructure definition, see the cloud telephony glossary.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep my existing cloud telephony number and just add an AI voice agent on top?

Yes — in most cases you keep your existing number and simply forward it to the agent, so nothing on your visiting cards, Google listing or ads has to change. Your current provider keeps doing what it is good at (the number, the routing, the recordings) and the agent becomes the thing that actually picks up and holds the conversation. The other option is that we supply a dedicated number, which carries a ₹2,000 per 30 days recharge auto-debited from your credits — if you forward your own number instead, that recharge does not apply. Which route makes sense depends on your current setup, and it is one of the first things we settle during the build. See how it works for the sequence.

If I only want WhatsApp and Instagram replies, do I need cloud telephony at all?

No — WhatsApp and Instagram workflows need no phone line, no virtual number and no ₹2,000 recharge. Chat is billed at ₹2 per conversation from the same prepaid credits, and the WhatsApp message costs charged by Meta land on your own Meta account with zero markup from us. This is a sensible place to start if the leak in your business is in the DM inbox rather than on the phone. If you later decide calls also need answering, the voice layer is added to the same agent — you are not rebuilding from scratch. Details on the WhatsApp agent and Instagram agent pages.

What does month one actually cost compared to just paying for a cloud telephony plan?

For a founding client the build itself is ₹0 and month one is a ₹10,000 minimum credit load, nothing more. Out of that ₹10,000, roughly ₹2,000 goes to the number recharge (only if we supply the number) and ₹5,000 to the Care Plan at the founding rate, leaving about ₹3,000 of usage credit — which at ₹2/min whole-minute billing is around 1,500 minutes of conversation. Setup is normally ₹40,000 one-time and is currently free for our 10 founding clients, in return for the Care Plan for the first three months and an honest testimonial plus a short case study after go-live. Credits never expire and top-ups start at ₹500. Full breakdown on the pricing page.

When is an AI voice agent not worth it, and I should stick to cloud telephony?

If your staff already answer nearly every call quickly and your problem is only visibility — you want call logs, recordings, routing to the right extension, or a single business number — cloud telephony alone will fix that and an AI voice agent is an expense you do not need yet. The same is true if your call volume is genuinely low and the calls are long, high-context negotiations where the customer expects you personally. The agent earns its keep when calls are being missed, when leads sit uncalled for hours, or when the same handful of questions gets asked over and over. If you are not sure which side you fall on, say so on contact and we will tell you honestly if the answer is cleanup rather than a build.

Will I lose the call recordings and reports I get from my cloud telephony provider?

No — and you generally gain a layer, because the agent records not just that a call happened but what was decided in it. Alongside the recording you get a written summary, the caller's language, what they asked for, whether a booking was made, and the outcome written into your sheet or CRM, so you are reading results rather than listening back to audio. Anything your telephony provider already logs keeps logging if you stay on your own number. A monthly report is also part of the Care Plan, which is required for the first three months and optional from month four.

Can the AI agent transfer the call to me if the customer insists on speaking to a human?

Yes — handoff is built into every agent, and you decide the trigger during the build. Common triggers are the caller explicitly asking for a person, an unusual or sensitive request, or a topic you have told us to never let the agent answer. Depending on your setup the agent either passes the live call through to your number or ends politely and pings you immediately with the summary so you call back knowing the context. It also never gives medical, legal or financial advice — those route to you by design. More on the conversation design in AI voice.

Cloud telephony is necessary infrastructure. It becomes valuable when a real workflow runs on it. For an Indian business trying to capture more inbound calls and paid leads, the better question is not which cloud telephony provider to pick first. It is what customer conversation should happen the moment the phone rings or the lead arrives.

Send us your current phone setup and one lead source. We will tell you whether you only need cloud telephony cleanup or a full AI voice agent workflow.
